Transparency International has released a corruption index for 2023.

CPI - Trancparency International

Transparency International’s perception index is the leading global indicator of public sector corruption in countries around the world.

Transparency International has published a corruption index every year since 1995. They consider 180 countries of the world and rank them according to the perception of the level of corruption in the public sector, rating a scale of 0 (very corrupt) to 100 (very “clean”) countries.

The 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) shows that corruption is thriving across the world.

Over two-thirds of countries score below 50 out of 100, which strongly indicates that they have serious corruption problems. The global average is stuck at just 43, while the vast majority of countries have made no progress or declined in the last decade. In addition, 23 countries have fallen to their lowest marks so far this year.

The global trend of weakening justice systems is reducing accountability for public officials, which allows corruption to thrive.

Francois Valerian, president of Transparency International, said: „Corruption will continue to thrive until justice systems can punish wrongdoing and keep governments in check. When justice is bought or politically interfered with, it is the people that suffer. Leaders should fully invest in and guarantee the independence of institutions that uphold the law and tackle corruption. It is time to end impunity for corruption.

Western Europe and the European Union remain among the most successful regions, although the average output of the countries in the area dropped to 65 this year.

The rest of the world is still stagnating, and all other regions have an average below 50 years. Eastern Europe and Central Asia are grappling with dysfunctional rule of law, growing authoritarianism and systemic corruption.

The Middle East and North Africa are showing poor progress, reflecting the current struggles with political corruption and conflict.

As for the rankings at the top, with the lowest corruption are Denmark (90), Finland (87), New Zealand (85), Norway (84) and Singapore (83).

Croatia is in 57th place in the table with a score of 50 as it had last year. Some of the countries that are in the rankings ahead of us, in addition to the listed five, are Also Mauritius, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Grenada, Costa Rica, Slovenia, Italy, Botswana….
